About this event
In response to growing global concerns of the carbon footprint of the construction sector, there has been a great level of interest recently in developing low-carbon concrete.
This presentation will introduce feasible approaches for manufacturing and using alternatives to traditional cement to lower net global CO2 emissions in the construction sector.
The first section will discuss the utilisation of industrial by-products such as ground granulated blast furnace slag and/or circulating fluidised bed combustion fly ash to develop alkali-activated concretes.
The second section will present the carbonated reactive MgO-based concrete, which can harden and gain strength through sequestrating CO2.

Speakers
Tien-Dung Nguyen
Tien-Dung Nguyen pursued a PhD degree in Civil Engineering at the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, Taiwan. After obtaining his PhD in 2014, he worked as a Research Fellow at the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, until November 2020.
He joined the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Civil Engineering of the University of Manchester as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in December 2020. His professional experience is primarily in the development and characterisation of novel cements and concretes. His research activities contribute to developing sustainable binders through the novel use of waste materials and carbon sequestration.
Of current interest is the use of graphene in enhancing the mechanical properties and durability performance of concrete structures.
